Hazrat Ali Asghar’s Biography

Abdullah ibn Hossein, known as Ali Asghar, is the son of Imam Hossain. His mother is

Robab, daughter of Emra al-ghays. His sister is Sakineh. Abdullah was born in Medina.

The Most Innocent One in Karbala

Ali Asghar was an outstanding example of innocence. He was a little child, incapable of

fighting against the enemy.

A Heavenly Infant

Ali Asghar is the only martyr dying in his father’s arms. It has been narrated that on the

moment of his death, a sound was heard from heaven: “leave him with God! Someone in

heaven is going to feed him”

The Only Companion Buried By Imam Himself

Ali Asghar was the only martyr buried by Imam Hossein himself.

An Unforgettable Event

The event of Ali Asghar’s martyrdom is one of unforgettable events of the history. Imam

Hossein splashed Ali Asghar’s blood to the sky but not even one drop fell on the ground.

Our praise be upon Abdullah ibn al-Hossein, the little infant hit by an arrow! The bloody

child that his blood was splashed to the sky! The one that his head was cut by an arrow while

he was in his father’s arms! May God curse Harmale ibn Kahel Asadi and his companions

that killed Ali Asghar.

1. Imam’s Farewell With the Infant

Imam Hossein hugged Ali Asgar and kissed him. Then, he said: “May these people be cursed

by God!”

2. Asking For Water to Feed the Infant

Imam Hossein brought Ali Asghar to the enemy and asked for water: “If you don’t have

mercy on me, at least have mercy on this child!”

3. Ali Asghar’s Martyrdom

Imam Hossein was looking at Hazrat Ali Asghar. Harmale aimed at Ali Asghar’s throat and

martyred him.

4. Drops of Blood

Imam took his hand under Ali Asghar’s throat. His hand was filled with blood. He splashed it

to the sky and not even one of the drops fell on the ground.

5. Burial of Ali Asghar

When Ali Asghar was martyred, Imam dug the ground by his sword and buried Ali Asghar’s

little body in that grave.

6. Hazrat Ali Asghar’s Shrine

When Imam buried his 6 month infant, he prayed for him. It has been narrated that he has

been buried next to other martyrs.

Some Points about Asking the Enemy for Water

Guiding the Enemy

According to this point that all Imams have been chosen to guide people, Imam Hossein tried

to awaken the sense of sympathy in the enemy in order to guide them. So he tried to do this

through displaying the thirst of an infant.

The Ultimatum

Imam Hossein’s aim was to issue an ultimatum to Ibn Saad’d army, so they couldn’t give any

excuses on the Day of Judgment.

The Cruelty of the Enemy

Through displaying the thirst of his little infant, Imam Hossein wanted everybody to know

how cruel the enemy was!

After Ali Asghar’s Martyrdom

Imam Hossein said: “O God! If you didn’t help us through this, please consider this help for

whom that is better than us (Hazrat Madhi)! Take revenge from these cruel people! And save

the blessings of all these difficulties for the Day of Judgment!”

Hossein’s Companions

Majma ibn Abdullah

Abdullah, Majma’s father, was one of the Prophet’s companions. Majma himself was one of

Ali’s companions on the day of Battle of Saffin. He and his sons left Kufa to accompany

Imam Hossein.

Ghareb ibn Abdullah

His mother was Fokayhe, Imam Hossein’s female slave. Hazrat Imam Hossein asked Fokayhe

to marry Abdullah ibn Arighat. They married and then Ghareb was born. Because of that

everyone knows him as Imam Hossein’s slave.

Monjah ibn Saham

He accompanied Imam Hossein’s children and came to Karbala. On the day of the war,

Monjah entered the battlefield bravely and was martyred by Hasan ibn Bekr Hanzaly.

Abdu al-Rahamn ibn Orve Ghafary

He was one of the bravest Shea and one of the most faithful companions of Imam Ali. He

was from Bani Ghafar tribe. His grandfather was one of Ali’s companions that accompanied

him on the battles of Jamal, Saffin, and Naharavan.

Zarghamet ibn Malek

He was an outstanding Shea and one of the people that abode allegiance to Muslim in Kufa.

When Muslim was martyred, he left Kufa in disguise in order o accompany Imam Hossain.

Zahir ibn Salim

On the 10

the day of Ashura.

Ghasem ibn Habib Azedy

Ghasem ibn Habib left Kufa in order to fight against Imam Hossein. But when he saw the

cruelties of Omavian he joined Imam Hossein and accompanied him.
th day of Muharram he decided to accompany Imam Hossein. He was martyred on
